For the Beauty of the Earth!

For the past few summers, Jayce has volunteered with T.E.R.T. (Timpanogos Emergency Response Team). Sounds pretty snazzy right? This is my second time going up there with him. He goes up there with other EMT people and they camp out for the weekend and help take care of injuries that happen on the mountain, call life flight if need be, etc. So really, this is what we did the whole time:

Played some mad UNO with the crew by the shack next to Emerald Lake! Haha, just kiddin' babe, I know you've done some pretty cool stuff up there. ;-) But really...this time things were rather uneventful as far as injuries go except for a couple of blisters and cuts.

However we had an AWESOME time. Here are some treasured pictures from our eventful weekend:

One of the many waterfalls on the way up from the bottom of the Aspen Grove trail head.

Let me tell you how this picture came to be...Chad: "Whoa..I kind of want to go under the ice pack..." Jayce: "No way man. Me too!" Chad: "Really? Should we do it?" Josh: "I'm going if you guys go!" (more or less) Boys will be boys!

I didn't push him!

This is Emerald Lake, where we spent most of our Saturday. We camped out about 10 minutes down from the lake.

This is Emerald Lake from the top of the summit:
Yeah...wayyyyy downnnn therrreeeee!

We decided to hike to the summit this time, we didn't last year because there was too much snow. I was kinda freaked out for a little bit of it and had to walk with my hand on the right side of my face so that I couldn't see the drop off of the trail in my peripheral vision but it was SO WORTH IT! Anyone who has the opportunity to go up there should. It was amazing!

Hiking along the "saddle" I snapped this to show where we were heading and how far and how high it was. See the second peak way out there? That's where the BYU shack is that someone built. When you reach that, you've "summitted."

Taking a break, we are much closer to the shack now! You can see the white little box off in the distance.

"Oh hey cliff edge!"

Here we are on top of the world in the shack! Wooooo!

Like I said, top of the world!

Now we journey over to the really smart part of hiking up to the summit. You see there are two ways to come down once you are up there: a. go back the way you came or b. slide down a steep glacier that goes all the way from the top to Emerald Lake. I said the smart part of the hike, so it's obvious that we chose to slide down the huge, natural, unsafe glacier.

And they're off! So, Jayce really wishes that he got a video recording of me going down the glacier because apparently it was rather comical. I was nervous--no shock there! I was going to try to shimmy down the first part by digging my feet into the snow because I was scared of going too fast down the first part because it's so stinkin steep. Bad idea. I slid anyways...and I wasn't quite ready for it. So, somehow while sliding down within the first 10 seconds I came away from the face of the mountain, did a 360 turn and then landed back on the glacier, continuing to slide with great speed. I was a little bruised, but not broken, and hey I gave everyone else waiting to go down quite the balletic show!

And that's all folks!
