Boosterthon Fun Run
One thing I learned from day one of school is that there are so. many. fundraisers. Seriously, we are hounded. Y-Ties, cookie dough, Charleston Wrap, book fairs, Chick-fil-A nights, and printing art on pillows just to name a few.
And they know how to work these kids too. "Mommy, and then they said that if I do ________, I'll get _________!" They show no mercy.
I have to say that the most well-crafted of all of the fundraisers so far was the Boosterthon Fun Run. A Fun Run with a week long build up of relentless conditioning of children to ask their parents to pledge money. "And then the Boosterthon Team came in and they were the best!! They showed us this video and we're going to do good! Then they started dancing and it was funny. They gave me this bracelet and I have a very important paper for you. Mommy, it's very very very very very very important!" Cameron hops in the car in the car pick-up line, "Mom, did you see that man out there in the blue shirt giving kids high fives?! He's from the Boosterthon Team!" "Mom, did you send in the money for that very important paper I gave to you? The last day for people to get a prize is tomorrow and I really really want to get a prize!" Touche Boosterthon Team.
The actual Fun Run ended up being GREAT though! Even I was ready to high five the whole Boosterthon Team afterwards.
Jayce was on the 3-midnight shift that week, so the whole family was there to cheer for Cameron and he was quiet a sight to see. Jayce and I have never seen him so determined. We didn't realize it before we saw him in action, but he had a goal and he was set on reaching it. He never stopped to go to the water tent like the other kids, he didn't walk on the walking laps, he just kept running. He had to stop every lap for them to mark his bib, but then he'd kick those cute little pale legs into gear again! He was the first of all the Kindergarteners and First Graders to finish! We were floored honestly.
During the run little comments that he had made in the last month and a half or so clicked into place. "In P.E. today I ran really fast! I wasn't as fast as so-and-so though, he's even faster than me!" Another random time, "I have an idea. So-and-so is the fastest person in our class, so I think if I run by him I'll be able to run faster." None of these comments happened particularly near the Fun Run, but I realized that running fast is important to Cameron and he considered this a great time to prove to himself that he could do it.
He was ecstatic when he finished, but also too shy to let us make a really big deal about it. I wanted Jayce to put him on his shoulders but Cameron didn't want to. I was just so proud of him! Just seeing his obvious determination to work towards a specific goal that meant something to him was such a sweet thing for us to see. I love this darling boy.
Cameron had told me about the "Backyard Box Office cheer" and I was excited to see it in action. See what I mean about the conditioning??
