Bedtime
Bedtime. Mom's have a lot of feels about "bedtime." Lately bedtime has been oh, so sweet in the Porter house. I love it, even though it's not perfect. After everyone does their nightly jobs and routines we re-group to read the scriptures. We're currently working through the Book of Mormon, which was Cameron's request after receiving his own copy for his birthday in May.
There's something about sitting to read the scriptures that screams, "MOVE AROUND LIKE YOU HAVE ANTS IN YOUR PANTS, ELBOW YOUR BROTHER IN THE RIBS HARD, FALL OFF THE COUCH AND HIT YOUR HEAD (YOU NEED ANOTHER GOOSE EGG), AND TRIP SPENCER AS HE AIMLESSLY WANDERS BY JUST FOR GOOD MEASURE." It's a mystery, but we'll work with it. Now whoever can sit on their bums and listen during scripture time can stay after prayer to read a few more books before bed. This has been working well, especially now that we've gotten our Halloween books out.
Tonight, after we read books Jack and Ben hopped into bed and I had reading time with Cameron. The other three get some one-on-one time during the day, but Cameron's fits best at night right now. Tonight Cameron read a book he got from the library called, Sir Small and the Dragonfly. It's about tiny people who have to deal with a dragonfly who comes to their town. The town is called Pee Wee and every time Cameron read the name he busted up laughing.
After reading I got a few more details about Cameron's day and then I asked him, "Cameron, what can I do to be a better Mommy?" because I've heard a couple people say they have gotten really great insights from doing that every once in a while. He just said, "Well, I just can't think of anything. You're just already a really good Mommy, so I can't think of anything that would make you better." Heart squeeze. Mental note not to ask him on a "bad" night...
Jack was already asleep when I went in to tuck him in. I wasn't surprised, he had a full day and he's our sleeper. I had already made a mental note earlier to spend some extra time with Ben at bedtime though, so it worked out well. He was ready to have me and keep me there as long as he possibly could. The staller extraordinaire!
First he asked, "So...do you want a story or a gift?"
Me: "Mmm...I'll take a gift."
Ben: "Okay, do you want a puppy or a...wolf?"
Me: "I'd like a wolf, please."
Ben: "Alright, buuuuut I only have red ones and they breathe fire balls."
Me: "Perfect. I would love a red fire ball breathing wolf!"
He then goes on to ask what color of button I want him to press to get it (the buttons could be anywhere on the bed, the wall, the light switch). I choose one and get an, "Well actually, that color of button isn't working because....But I actually still have some red ones, blue, orange, and black."
Me: "Okay, a red button."
Ben: "I also have white."
Me: "No thanks, I'd like you to push the red button for my red fire ball breathing wolf."
Ben: "Well uhhh, I will, but first I just got to fix the machine..."
It went on like this until I was holding my new pet wolf.
We finally gave each other eskimo kisses and then I said, "Benson, you know what? I love you."
Ben: "Excuse me," and I realized he had just tooted.
I love these boys!
