The Air Up There
Sometimes I look out the window and see this:
Fog. Here it's not quite so thick, but you still can't see the valley below:
I love days like these because it makes me feel like curling up by the fire and reading. It does have it's eerie qualities though. Have you ever seen the movie The Others? You know the part when Nicole Kidman goes to find a doctor in the village and gets lost in all of the fog? Yeah, it's like that. It creeps up on you as you get higher up on the mountain and by the time you're driving around the neighborhoods up here you're going about 10 miles an hour because you can't see 5 feet in front of you. It's fun though, don't get me wrong.
However, sometimes the roles are reversed and the fog is only down in the valley and everything up here is bright and sunny. This is more rare, but I love it! The valley is literally just a blanket of clouds and you can't tell where the sky starts and the fog ends on the horizon. It's a sea of cloud. The next few pictures show it as it's clearing away and showing the valley more and more.
It too has an eerie quality to it though, which actually kind of adds to the fun of it. You feel kind of cut off from all of Salt Lake Valley, like it's just you and the clouds. It gives this odd feeling that something is happening in the valley without you knowing it though. Like the clouds are going to clear away and everything down there will be gone with the clouds.
I tried to get some pictures of what it looks like at night when the clouds are covering the valley because it's beautiful, but no pictures I took came anywhere near as close as the real deal, so I won't even post them. All you can see is blackness except for the areas of fog that are over the bigger cities. The cities illuminate the fog from underneath so the darkness is broken up by big patches of cloud that are softly glowing. Oh, it is nice.
And here we are after a lightly fallen snow:
I just can't get over how beautiful it is up here. Everyone keeps saying that we're getting off easy this year as far as snow fall goes. Normally they get quite a large amount stacked up and it's a big pain to shovel every other day, but we've probably only had to shovel under ten times. And by "we" I mean Jayce and David. :-) Plus, we've got a 4 wheeler with a plow attached to the front of it and a snowblower, so really? I'm sure super snowy winters would wear on me, but I still think that it would be worth it. I love it up on the mountain.
