Terry Family Reunion 2017

Growing up in Virginia, I had heard of the Outer Banks and here in Georgia I see a fair amount of cars driving around with "OBX" stickers on the back windows. Now that I have been there, I get it. We had our first Terry family reunion and it was the perfect location, at least to me. A pool (backyard), the beach (across the street), good company, fun food, and plenty of activities to do in the area to fill in the gaps. We had a fabulous week.

If you and yours live on the east coast and you're looking for a place to meet up, I highly recommend the Outer Banks. Here is a smattering of what we did that week:

  1. The beach. I have yet to go to the beach and regret it. I love hearing the waves, I love smelling the air, there is so much to do and somehow you feel like you have all the time in the world. There was crab digging, water playing, wave facing, burying in the sand, the skim board (a challenge yet to be conquered), and apparently the making of poop soup or something like that. Not to worry, there was no actual poop involved but when you dig a hole and a wave fills it with brown sandy water and you have a bunch of 4-8 year-old boys around, you obviously have achieved poop soup.

We had two canopies, a lot of camping chairs, two big buckets with water and a kiddy pool to be played with in the shade, and two wagons and a stroller to bring it all in. My siblings taught me how to set up well for a day at the beach.

I have been trying to rediscover my desire to run because it kind of evaporated over a year ago. Times and seasons. I went on a couple of runs along the beach and it was just what I was looking for.

2. The pool. Not a necessity for me, but a great bonus. The kids loved it, especially because Aunt Rachel provided the awesome inflatables and Grammy brought some water soakers.

Kids in goggles!

3. Bodie Lighthouse.

 4. "The Lost Colony" play. It was a really well done production telling the story of the failed Roanoke colony, however it lasted a little too long for the energy level I had left for listening to Old English. I was glad I had Mommers to give me a thorough rundown of the story before the play began so I didn't have to try too hard. Queen Elizabeth's costumes were gorgeous and the Indian men had to feel really confident about how toned their butt cheeks were!

5. Duck Donuts. Our first time there and it did not disappoint. I'm not a big donut person, but these were delicious. Plus, it had the whole duck thing going on so I couldn't resist. :-)

6. The Wright Brothers National Memorial. Not a Terry get-together without a little bit of history!

Replicas of the hangars the Wright's built to house their flyers and stay in for their summer month experiments.

The first motored flights started right there.

Aunt Talia had the brilliant idea to have the kids run the length of the four flights made that day. It was darling! The fourth and longest flight went 852 ft.

A boy, history, and a spatula.

7. Parasailing. Glad I did it! Probably won't do it again! Three Terry girls go up in tip top shape, three Terry girls come down motion sick! Jayce and I went up first, then Rachel and Rebekah, and then Dad and Kathryn the Brave!

Needless to say our week at the Outer Banks was packed but also leisurely. We loved it and loved being together with Terry's. Till next time!
