Mom and Dad Highlights
Jayce Face latest and greatest:
Jayce has done psychiatry and surgery rotations so far this school year. Both have been great learning opportunities, especially surgery. He actually came upstairs from studying one day and said, "I just love what I'm learning now!" and then proceeded to tell me all about the connections he has been able to make between his books and the hands on work he has seen/participated in at the hospitals.
It's one thing to read about a certain body malfunction and another thing to witness it first hand. He gets to see things from the beginning when patients come in to consult the surgeon about something all the way through to their recovery process after the surgeon has taken care of business. Plus he has participated along the way. Not only is it rewarding for him, but it is rewarding for me to see that he is putting so much energy into something that he truly loves.
And really, I like a guy in scrubs.
Jayce also had the opportunity to go to a conference put on by Mammoth Medical Missions in Mammoth Lakes, CA for a week in September. Jayce met Dr. Mike Karch during second year when he came out to give the military students at RVU a lecture on disaster medicine. Jayce so enjoyed the class that he approached Dr. Karch afterwards and got into a conversation with him about publishing a textbook on the subject. Ba-da-bing, ba-da-boom Jayce ended up at this conference that Dr. Karch & team put on every year. This way he could learn more about disaster medicine and would have the opportunity to meet other doctors that would contribute to the textbook.
Everything seemed to fall into place for him to go. He was able to get some scholarship money to pay his way and the doctor he was rotating with not only allowed him to take the time off, but was very supportive of it. Blessings, blessing, blessings.
While sitting in one of the classes he got the overwhelming feeling that he was supposed to be there. We'll see the fruit of that confirmation in the future I guess.
Here was the view from his room:
And here's one of the life-like scenarios they were doing.
He learned how to use a car battery to charge things, he learned about the different stages in the aftermath of a disaster, he learned about how to set up a sterile medical site in an area that just went through a natural disaster, he learned about the must-take equipment, etc. If you know Jayce, you know that this seminar was his bowl of cereal.
Is my proud showing? Sorry, he's just on such a long road with medicine that it's nice to celebrate the wins.
Me:
"Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy!
Happy people just don't kill their husbands!"
Name that movie! I've been able to up how many days a week I can fit in a work out thanks to an aerobics group in my area. They meet at a nearby church 3x a week. They've got steps, weights, and mats stored in the gym closet and there are 3 instructors that rotate teaching. Our kids get to run around and play with nursery toys in the gym with us, which works out really well for all the moms. I feel really lucky. If you have the resources in your area, start this up and you won't regret it! So at the very least I've got that and when I get to fit in a couple of runs on top of that, I feel great. WIN!
There's also a running group that someone in my ward started. They get together every other Saturday to do longer runs together. My first time it started dumping buckets on us half way through the run. IT WAS AWESOME.
On top of that the whole Porter family is participating in a fitness challenge before Christmas thanks to Fit Felicia and Ripped Ryan (Kathryn and Scott) so the motivation is coming at me from all sides! There's a time and a season for everything and I guess this is my exercise season.
Lastly, the two of us had a great Conference weekend. We even got to go to the Saturday afternoon session. I love the Gospel.
