Les Miserables

Image
So, I recently rediscovered my love for the musical, Les Miserables.  It was brought on by the trailer for the new movie they are making of it. I knew I needed to journal about it when the music brought me to tears while I was working out last week. Who does that?!  It was at the part where Javier is telling Valjean that men like him never change--"Once a thief, forever a thief"--that part, and Valjean says, "You are wrong, and always have been wrong. I'm a man no worse than any man." Ah, anybody else just love that part? What a slap in the face that is to the act of judging. And then again in what I've always thought was a rather annoying song, "Turning Through the Years." I'll blame it on motherhood because it was when the women are talking about the men that died at the barricades and someone says, "someone used to cradle them and kiss them when they cried." Oh Cameron, please don't ever grow up! Anyways, I gotta say that the...

Hunger Games

Image
The Hunger Games movie premiere has come and gone and we had a pretty fun time with it. Thursday evening Jessica and Scott came up to join us in Draper and everyone had a "Capitol Feast" consisting of "Sleep Syrup" (Martinelli's), "Stream Water," "Nightlock" (blackberries), District 11 Bread, bread from the Mellark bakery, and "Lamb Stew" (Potato Soup). We also had a Tessarae system where you had to write your name down every time you took more portions. At the end we drew a boys name and a girls name and the tributes had to do...the dishes! I was chosen, but lucky for me Jessica volunteered as tribute. :-) We played a trivia game and then spent a couple hours making all of these shirts, but I must say they turned out rather well. Just handmade stencils and bleach in a spray bottle! You can't quite see the cool details of the spray of the bleach in these pictures, but trust me, they look really neat in real life. .....

Cameron Eats

I realize most people probably think more videos of Cameron are getting rather old and boring, but I'm a mom...I just can't help it. Plus, this is for the interested relatives that aren't here to experience it! At Cameron's 6 month check up the doctor said that we should start beefing him up a bit more because he's dropped a little on his curve upward in weight and height. My milk supply has been dwindling for a while and so we're facing the music and supplementing with formula as well. It's actually been working out really well and takes the stress off of me because now I know that he is eating enough. We've also started to work in some real food because his tummy is now ready to go! His taste buds are another story. We decided to start with vegetables because I read in one book that it gives them a better chance of liking vegetables, whereas if you start with fruit it might make it harder for them to get into vegetables. However, I just...

I solemnly swear I will miss Harry Potter

Image
My name is Sarah Porter and I am a Harry Potter fanatic. The Harry Potter 7.2 movie opening has come and gone, but I just couldn't pass up a blog post dedicated to my favorite fictional character. I was one of the many that got hooked on the Harry Potter books when they were just blossoming. I think I read HP and the Sorcerer's Stone in 5th grade and then I just downed them one after the other. Literally. A Harry Potter book release was a big deal in my life. I remember dragging even my dad to a midnight release at Border's for the Goblet of Fire. Thanks Dad. :-) After I got the new book I took it EVERYWHERE with me. I stayed up for hours in bed continually saying, "oh...just one more chapter!" and I even read in the car--something I nevvveerrrr do because I get carsick. They were that good. Before the last book-The Deathly Hallows-came out my friend and I may or may not have re-read the whole series (not uncharacteristic of me before a new book) and taken notes...

Corrie Ten Boom

Image
This month in my ward's book club we read The Hiding Place and I LOVED it. I want to be like Corrie Ten Boom...just ask Jayce, that's what I kept on leaning over and telling him as I got further and further into the book. It's about a woman named Corrie Ten Boom and her family from Haarlem, Holland. They were a major part of the anti-Nazi underground in Holland during World War II. They arranged safe havens for Jews all over the country and hid a number of Jews in their own home, which had a "secret room" installed in it. They were finally caught by Nazi soldiers and Corrie and her sister, Betsie, go to a number of awful jails and finally end up at a women's extermination camp in Germany called Vught. The story is full of inspiring messages, stories, and miracles that occur during this journey. Essentially, it all revolves around Christ-like love. This little Christian family in Holland was able to make all the difference in the lives of so many Jewish esca...

iRead

I was sooo excited to get so many good books this year for Christmas. I thought I would have to wait until a break from school, but I haven't been able to help it. I'm on to my second book even though the semester is under way. I read on the way home from campus, during those extra few minutes before class starts, as a reward for getting all my homework done (...or when I feel like procrastinating on my homework!). I love it!! I haven't been able to read for fun in forever. Plus, I'm trying to branch out more into some "big kid" books. I used to read the Harry Potter series just about every summer as a tradition, but although those books will always hold a dear place in my heart, I've decided to broaden my horizons. :-) I read The Lost Symbol first-thanks Kimber and Fabs! The only other Dan Brown book that I've read was Angels and Demons, but I got way into it so I put this on my Christmas wish list this year. It's SO GOOD! It gets so intense! On...
