Women and the Priesthood by Sheri Dew

I just finished reading Sheri Dew's book, Women and the Priesthood and thought it was great. I've become a Sheri Dew fan after reading two of her latest books. I highly recommend this one. I plan on reading it again sometime because there is a lot more I can learn and relearn from it.

Besides pretty much the entire chapter on "God Expects Women to Receive Revelation" and the last three chapters of the book, here are some of my favorite quotes in it.

"...the Church exists for nothing else but to draw men into Christ, to make them little Christs. If they are not doing that, all the cathedrals, clergy, missions, sermons, even the Bible itself, are simply a waste of time. God became Man for no other purpose. It is even doubtful whether the whole universe was created for any other purpose."
-C.S. Lewis

"...it is a serious thing to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses, to remember that the dullest and most uninteresting person you talk to may one day be a creature which...you would be strongly tempted to worship...It is in light of these overwhelming possibilities, it is with the awe and circumspection proper to them, that we should conduct all our dealings with one another...There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal."
-C.S. Lewis

This one has been really interesting for me to think about. Basically, what does my soul look like?
"What does the part of me that I can't see look like? What do my courage, virtue, and integrity look like? What does my heart look like? What do my faith and testimony look like? How deep are my spiritual roots?"
-Sheri Dew

"The only limitations on our communication with our Heavenly Father are those we impose on ourselves. We impose those limitations by not seeking, not asking, and not learning how to receive answers, gifts, and information."
-Sheri Dew

"In this Church, what we know will always trump what we do not know. And remember, in this world, everyone is to walk by faith."
-Elder Jeffrey R. Holland
Really, you can picture exactly how he said that too. I hear his voice in my head as I read it.

"The doctrine of motherhood has less to do with earthly child-bearing--though it certainly includes and is epitomized by bearing children--than it does with eternal privileges, responsibilities, and endowments. Motherhood in its doctrinal sense can only fully be exercised upon principles of righteousness--much the same as priesthood authority--and can be understood and exercised by all righteous women, not just those who have the privilege of bearing children in this life."
-Sheri Dew

"Here in mortality we tend to equate motherhood solely with maternity, but in the Lord's language the word mother has layers of meaning. Of all the words or titles they could have chosen to define her role and her essence, both God and the Father and Adam called Eve 'the mother of all living,' and they did so before she ever bore a child."
-Sheri Dew

This was a humbling quote for me, since the world puts a very different spin on what it is to be a "stay-at-home-mom."
"One day early in our marriage the light clicked on for me. It happened after we had been to an event sponsored by my work. One person after another complimented my wife on supporting me in my career. As we drove home, it dawned on me that actually I was the one doing the supporting. I went to work every day to make it possible for her to stay home with our children and focus without distraction on the most important work we as a couple would ever do--and that was raise our children to love the Lord."
--A friend of Sheri Dew

"Conversion requires immersion. Immersion in truth. Immersion in the word of God. Immersion in the teachings of prophets, seers, and revelators. And immersion in the Spirit. True conversion doesn't just happen. It takes sustained spiritual work, and it takes desire. What do you and I really want?"
-Sheri Dew

"There isn't much about my life that I expected or that I have hoped and prayed for. But there is one thing I've learned through life's ups and downs: The only things that really matter are the things that matter to the Lord. Awards and plaques collect dust. Jobs change and sometimes go away. Titles and callings change. Bank accounts go up and down and sometimes disappear. But our Father and His Son do not change. Who we are doesn't change. Why we are here doesn't change. And what is important to our lives now and forever doesn't and won't change."
-Sheri Dew

Oh man, there are so many other things in this book that I loved! I just had to share some in case it encouraged anyone else to read it, or just encouraged anyone else in general.
