Love is in the air...!

Our very first Valentine's Day as a married couple has come and gone! It was quite the weekend. Friday night we went rollerskating-Jayce's favorite date-with some friends from our ward. Among our fellow skaters at the rink was a 14-year-old girl's birthday party, a small crew of high schoolers, and the rest were pretty much super cool middle schoolers (which by the way, were 10x better on their skates than I was). Us married college students fit right in. :-) Saturday was pretty normal during the day. It was the usual with rehearsals, basketball, hospital, and studying. Saturday night was quite the highlight however. We strolled on into the cultural hall of our church building to attend the Stake Valentine's Dance. Whooo! When we first got there we thought it was going to be pretty lame and decided we would probably get seconds of chocolate fondue, wait a little bit, and then leave. Low and behold the night developed into greatness! More couples started to show up and t...

The Sunday Post: Divine Potential

He Says: Have you ever seen Ripley's Believe it or not? So they once had an episode where they demonstrated the potential final products of a single block of iron. The market cost of the block of iron was about $5.00. From this one block, they could make a set of horseshoes that would be worth about $10.50, nails and pins that would sum to a net worth of $3,285 or watch springs that would be worth about $250,00. I know I didn't believe it myself, but hey it's Ripley's believe it or not. ;) It's interesting that this was the same block of iron that could produce drastically different products with drastically different values. The major difference that brought about these different results was and is simply which craftsman produced the final product. With all of us, we also have a choice of which craftsman's hands we will place ourselves in. Isaiah, a prophet in the old testament speaking for the Lord stated, "Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silv...

It's Official

Image
Well ladies and gentlemen, it's official: I, Sarah Porter, am running a marathon. Wooo! I just registered for the American Discovery Trail marathon for Labor Day 2010. I'm running it with two of my sister-in-law's, Jessica and Lindsey. The boys will be waiting for us at the finish line with the food, water, massage tables, and arms with which we will collapse into and cry tears of exhaustion and triumph. Sounds great, eh? Now, let me let you in on a little secret: I don't love running. I was never one of the fast kids in gym class that got a six minute something mile, I don't enjoy it when running makes my legs itch (Rebekah you can vouch for me with the itchy legs, you know what I'm talking about sister!), it makes me flemmy in my throat (gross, I know), it gives me shin splints, it makes me sore the next day, uphill stinks, and it makes me super red-faced. I know, I know, "Why in the world is this chick putting herself through this??" It's becaus...

Jayce: Man on Fire

Image
Jayce is a man on fire this year! He has managed to pack his schedule with many extracurricular activities this semester. Basketball and medicine seem to be the themes. He's co-coaching a Jr. Jazz middle school team with brother-in-law, Josh, and playing for the 147th Ward intramural basketball team. Wooo! They're hard core, practicing every Saturday at 7:00 a.m. They're going for the gold: a t-shirt given to the champs of intramurals that they can then wear around campus to boast of their mad skills. Game on. Only four of the boys could make it to picture day. :-( Among coaching basketball and playing in intramurals, Jayce volunteers at the hospital every Saturday, supervises BYU's EMS on Thursday's from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., studies for the MCAT, works at the MTC, is a full-time student, is actively engaged in serving in the Church, and continues to be the greatest husband ever. He also mentioned today that he wanted to go up to Salt Lake a couple of times to s...

A Porter Returns!

Image
Jayce's younger brother, Scott, came home from his mission last Thursday from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil! We gathered at the airport for his arrival with Jayce's Aunt and Uncle. Saturday morning we all drove to Colorado where there was an open house for Scott in Jayce's home stake. Sunday he gave his homecoming talk in church and then we drove back to Provo! It was a fun weekend, even if it was a little crazy. Not only did I get to meet the wonderful people of Monument, Colorado that Jayce grew up with, but I got to meet my brother-in-law for the first time!! Crazy, huh? We had some of Scott's and Jayce's old friends over Friday night for pizza and games to celebrate. After Scott's release and homecoming talk. He did a wonderful job with his talk, everyone was extremely touched by his testimony of faith in Christ. I tell you what, the Porter family never ceases to inspire. On a side note...Jayce and I just reached our 9 month anniversary! I came home to find this on...

iRead

I was sooo excited to get so many good books this year for Christmas. I thought I would have to wait until a break from school, but I haven't been able to help it. I'm on to my second book even though the semester is under way. I read on the way home from campus, during those extra few minutes before class starts, as a reward for getting all my homework done (...or when I feel like procrastinating on my homework!). I love it!! I haven't been able to read for fun in forever. Plus, I'm trying to branch out more into some "big kid" books. I used to read the Harry Potter series just about every summer as a tradition, but although those books will always hold a dear place in my heart, I've decided to broaden my horizons. :-) I read The Lost Symbol first-thanks Kimber and Fabs! The only other Dan Brown book that I've read was Angels and Demons, but I got way into it so I put this on my Christmas wish list this year. It's SO GOOD! It gets so intense! On...

Christmas Time!

Image
For me the festivities began with the December performance of my ballet girls. The ballet department at Center Stage put together a show with excerpts from "The Nutcracker" and my ballet 5's were "Tea/Chinese" and my 6's were "Hot Chocolate/Spanish" from the Land of the Sweets. They did great! The Saturday morning after finals Jayce and I had our own little Christmas celebration together before all of our family get-together's. Wrapping paper was sparse, so we did what we could! Note the phone book pages and package with three different kinds of wrapping paper on it (none having to do with Christmas). We woke up and had chocolate chip waffles (dieting starts after new years, right?) and then opened presents together. Here's part of the loot: Between each other, sibblings, and both sets of parents Jayce and I got everything we asked for and more. A hiking backpack from Jayce's parents, movies, TimTam's, books, Jayce got three pairs o...
